HOVER MODE: Basically keeps your drone hovering at a constant altitude without you having to keep adjusting the throttle stick.
FPV: Stands for First Person View, FPV enables you to see exactly what the drone’s camera is seeing. Viewed on a monitor or smartphone in real time.

Need to know the meaning of a particular word or phrase about drones
Check out our Quick Reference Guide Of Drone Terminology
- It should be lightweight and durable.
- Should be RTF (Ready to fly) out of the box and have a controller that offers beginner and expert modes.
- The size should be small enough to fly indoors or big enough to use outdoors if that’s where you want them to use it.
- FYI: Before you give a drone to a kid as a gift, make sure the batteries are charged and don’t forget the batteries for the remote control. (I actually make it a point to test the drone prior to the big day in order to avoid disappointment)
In a market where there are so many types of drones to choose from, finding the right remote control drone for a kid can be challenging.
What To Look For:
Here are a few simple guidelines to use when buying drones for kids.
As noted above, Most small drones are made with ABS Plastic which is pretty rugged, but It’s always good to see if spare parts, not just the batteries are also available for purchase. Propellers are usually the first component to get broken.
There are two primary ways to control a drone. With the remote controller that comes with the drone or with a smartphone using an app to control the drone.
For kids under 14, the RC controlled version is probably the best choice, However many kids and teens now have smartphones they want to use instead. Most models offer both control options, Check before your purchase to be sure.
Look for drones with changeable batteries. Block batteries work better for kids than the pin type. Charging times for batteries can range anywhere from 45 minutes to a couple of hours, So buying an extra battery or two is a good idea.
Flight times average 5-7 minutes per battery. Some newer models have flight-times of 15 minutes.
If you only want a toy drone for your kid to fly around, the quality of the camera won’t really matter. However, if you’re looking to buy a drone for a teenager, they are more likely to be sharing the pictures on their social networks, So you’ll want to buy a model with a decent camera. Most have a 720p camera but there are models with better 1080p cameras.
Transport and Storage:
Consider a carrying case if one is not included to help keep everything together. Also helps protect the drone from damage when not in use.
Most kids get very excited upon receiving a drone for a gift, But before your kid runs outside with their new drone. Make sure they read the user’s manual and understand the safety instructions.
Make safety a priority and set some ground rules for them to follow
- DO NOT FLY NEAR OR OVER PEOPLE
- Don’t fly it over car traffic or near busy roadways.
- Do not fly near suspended electric lines or towers
- Don’t fly over the water or in the rain
- Never catch a drone in flight with your hands, the propellers can be very dangerous.
FFA Rules to follow:
- Observe the regulations in your locality
- Keep the drone in your sight at all times
- Fly no higher than 400 ft
- Do not fly within 5 miles of an airport
- Respect others right to privacy
- Registration requirements (See FAQ below)
Toy drones are labelled with age recommendations for how old the child should be to fly the drone, Parents should use their own discretion to decide whether or not their child is responsible enough to fly a drone.
Drones like anything with moving parts can be dangerous, Indoors or outside, doesn’t matter. You cannot just hand over a new drone to a kid and let them play unattended. Adult supervision is a must for every young flyer.
NOTE: It is your responsibility to ensure the safe use of whichever drone you purchase.
FAQ About Drones For Kids:
What age is appropriate for a drone?

Are Drones Safe for Kids?
The answer to this question depends on a number of factors: the age of the child, the environment in which they will operate the drone, will it be inside or outside, with or without parental supervision and of coarse the type of drone to be used.
Do I need to Register the Drone?
For a small quadcopter that will only be flown indoors, No, If the drone is over 0.55lbs in weight and you’re in the US, you’ll have to register it. The main thing is to have them start off slowly and only fly the drone at a low altitude until they are confident with controlling it.
As a parent, you are responsible for making sure your kids are flying their drones in appropriate places,
A great resource is the FAA’s B4UFLY, a free app that helps pilots distinguish whether or not there are restrictions or limitations in the areas they want to fly.
What if the neighbors complain about my kid flying a drone?
Unless you live on a big farm or out in the country, Some residents might get upset about your kid using a drone in their neighborhood. It would be a good idea to alert the neighbors beforehand, that your kids have a new drone, particularly if there haven’t been any drones in the area before.
Your neighbors will likely not mind the drone so long as it is not annoying them and kept at a safe and respectful distance.
Teach your children to be respectful and to avoid flying directly over the neighbors’ properties.
